Elephanta Caves

Elephanta Caves

The Elephanta Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, are an impressive example of rock-cut architecture and art from medieval India. These caves are situated on the Elephanta or Gharapuri Island, just 11 km from the city of Mumbai. The caves were originally adorned with intricate paintings, which have since faded, but the stunning view of the Mumbai skyline from the island is still worth the trip alone. The Elephanta Caves can be reached by ferry from Gateway of India.

Dated back to the 5th to 7th centuries, these cave temples are primarily dedicated to Lord Shiva and are divided into two groups. The first group consists of five Hindu caves, while the second group consists of two smaller Buddhist caves. The Hindu caves feature stone sculptures that represent the Shaiva Hindu sect. Notable images include the 'Trimurti', a three-headed Shiva, 'Gangadhar', a depiction of the river Ganga as it descends to earth, and 'Ardhnareshwar', which represents Shiva and Parvati in the same body.

Aside from its historical and cultural significance, the Elephanta Caves offer a unique trekking opportunity. As a guest of our luxury hotel, you can take a day trip to this remarkable site and marvel at the exquisite craftsmanship of the sculptures and the stunning natural surroundings of the island.
