St. Thomas Fort

St. Thomas Fort

Nestled in the tranquil village of Thangassery, the remnants of Thangassery Fort, also known as St. Thomas Fort, evoke a sense of history and intrigue. Standing on the shores of the Arabian Sea, this coastal defense structure, established in 1519 CE by the Portuguese, holds tales of its inception and the battles it witnessed. Originally featuring three towers, four bastions, and a seafront entrance, the fort was designed to meet artillery requirements of the time. Over the years, it passed through the hands of the Dutch and the British, eventually falling into ruins. Today, the remains of the fort, including an arched gateway, towers, and ancient fort walls, stand as a testament to its glorious past, enticing history enthusiasts to uncover the patchy colonial history of Kerala.
