MUMBAI – 28 March 2014 - The Leela Palaces, Hotels and Resorts will proudly join Earth Hour, the worldwide movement to celebrate the commitment to our planet, on Saturday, 29 March 2014 at 8:30 pm.

All signages and non-essential lights at all eight luxury hotels around the country will be switched off and the essential lights would be dimmed to safe level. To counterbalance, hotels will use candles aesthetically to light up the various spaces along with creating a chain of candlelight dinners across its award-winning 5 star restaurants, to communicate the global call for climate change awareness to guests in an accessible and beautiful manner. All esteemed guests will also be invited to participate in this initiative through personalized letters from their General Manager.

The group will also actively raise awareness about this important campaign among thousands of its Twitter and Facebook fans and followers.

Earth Hour 2014, an initiative of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), is the world’s single largest annual event, which has inspired a millions of people across 152 countries to switch off lights to draw attention to the worldwide issue of global warming and climate change.

"The Leela’s support of Earth Hour is a reaffirmation of our commitment to the environment and our endeavor to involve our guests and employees in raising awareness of environmental issues facing our planet,” said Rajiv Kaul, President, The Leela Palaces, Hotels and Resorts. “We believe that every individual at The Leela can make a vital difference.”

Since its inception, the group has focused on Greening by converting barren land on which the 5 star hotels are built into lush zones to benefit surrounding communities, further reducing energy and water consumption, and responsibly handling waste management while limiting carbon emissions, and inspiring employees and guests to support the environment.

The group has also been acclaimed for its green construction standards that have achieved the highest ratings - Platinum LEED certifications - from the U.S. Green Building Council, for sustainable design and world-class green practices.
