SEEPZ
Santacruz Electronics Export Processing Zone situated in East Andheri, Mumbai, is the oldest Special Economic Zone in India. Established in 1973 to facilitate economic growth, SEEPZ was granted a Free Trade Zone status in 1999. The centre aims to attract foreign investment and the latest technology with powerful incentives such as liberal economic laws, tax benefits and uninterrupted power supplies. The close proximity of the zone to the international airport which is a mere 6 kilometers away and the energetic Mumbai harbour which lies 30 kilometers away enhances SEEPZ’s convenience for export trade. In addition, the government has installed a special in-house customs office within the zone. The simplified procedures of the clearance centre add speed and convenience to transporting consignments as they do not have to be re-checked at the airport or the docks.
SEEPZ is principally used by software companies and jewelry exporters who have established export processing centres in the zone’s Standard Design Factories. Over 40% of Indian Jewelry exports are handled by SEEPZ, reflecting the success of the commercial concept.
Apart from its importance as a vital economic centre, the premises also contain a historic Portuguese church dating back to 1579. Visitors to SEEPZ are required to obtain special permits due to its status as a High Security Zone. The central location of The Leela Kempinski Mumbai renders a convenient access for business executives to SEEPZ, whilst remaining in one of the best Mumbai 5 star hotels in terms of service, elegance, style and facilities.
