Sanjay Gandhi National Park
Also known as the Borivali Park, The Sanjay Gandhi National Park is Mumbai’s only national wildlife reserve. Situated amidst the hills of Borivali, the vast premises contain an astoundingly varied collection of flora and fauna despite its close proximity to the city. The climatic conditions of the region are best from October to March at the end of the monsoon season. During this period the park is aglow with an abundance of colourful flowers and new growth attracting innumerable birds and butterflies.
The reserve offers a safe haven to the region’s wildlife, conserving and protecting it from the ravages of urbanization. Many species of the deer family, macaques, four honed antelopes and a surprising number of leopards as well as a variety of other animals can be viewed at the park. Visitors can also have a close glimpse of lions from special vehicles at the Lion Safari Park. The sanctuary is a veritable paradise for bird watching with a count of over 250 migratory and resident birds. It is also home to an assortment of reptiles making a visit to Sanjay Gandhi National Park a comprehensive experience of the region’s biodiversity.
In addition to its rich flora and fauna, the reserve also contains an archeological site of importance; The Kanheri Caves. Dating back to the 3rd century BC, the caves provided a retreat for Buddhist monks. Located amidst the tranquil forest, the ruins of this great religious centre still continue to proclaim the rich and ancient heritage of Mumbai.
Visitors to the city will find a haven of tranquility at The Leela Mumbai, a premier hotel in Mumbai India which combines convenient location with a rich tradition of hospitality.
