The Leela Kempinski - Know Mumbai

Gateway of India

A relic of India’s colonial heritage, the Gateway of India is considered a portal for tourists who wish to explore the myriad attractions of Mumbai. The monument is located at the much frequented Apollo Bunder in South Mumbai. Fringed by the azure waters of the Arabian Sea and the Marine Drive, the gateway is truly magnificent when viewed at night.

The historical triumphal arch was erected in honour of the visit of King George V and Queen Mary to the city in 1911. Its foundation stone was laid in 1913 and the construction commenced in 1920. The completion of the structure took four years and its cost rose to staggering proportions. Built according to the design of a British architect, George Wittet, the Gateway of India resembles the Parisian Arch de Triomphe. Despite this superficial similarity its architecture follows the Indo-Saracenic style and shows traces of Gujarati influences rendering the monument a distinctively Indian creation. The 26 meter high arch is supported by four turrets. The structure is constructed with yellow basalt strengthened with concrete while its stones are adorned with intricately carved latticework subtly fusing the solid with the ethereal.

Although the Gateway of India was initially built as a tribute to the British Raj, the first historical event that took place at the arch was the departure of the last British troops after India’s independence. Today, the gateway welcomes visitors to discover the rich heritage and vibrant present of Mumbai, India’s largest city.
