According to legend, Kerala was raised from the sea by Parasurama, the famed Hindu warrior priest. St. Thomas first landed here, so did the Jews fleeing the destruction of the Temple of Solomon. Islam came to India in Kerala in the form of Arab traders during the Prophet’s life time. Phoenicians, Chinese, Romans, Arabs, the Portuguese, Dutch, French and British; all came either as traders or invaders and left their imprint on God’s Own Country. Take India’s oldest synagogue, mosque, and European church, mix a large population of Syrian Christians and Muslims, sprinkle strong matrilineal traditions and top off with India’s highest literacy rate; you get a state that is a beacon of harmonious prosperity.Wherever you go in Kerala, you will find people aware and proud of their traditions and culture. From ancient dance forms like Kathakali to Kalaripayattu, believed to the mother of all other martial arts in the world, to Ayurveda, the 5000 year old time tested path to rejuvenation, every cultural tradition of Kerala is observed with as much enthusiasm as it is practiced. So it comes as no surprise that festivals like the Snake Boat Race in Alappuzha and Elephant Race at Guruvayoor are still performed like the first one centuries ago. Do get in touch with us and we’ll be happy to arrange a guided tour that will let you experience the true culture of Kerala.
Malayalam is the local language and is widely spoken. And since Kerala is the most literate state in India, a fair number of its people are conversant in English.
Weather
Kerala is the most southerly of India’s states. Bound by the
Arabian Sea on one side and the Western Ghat mountain range on
the other, Kerala is one of the wettest places in India. As much as
5000 mm of rain can fall in some parts, while average rainfall is
around 3000 mm for the 4-5 wet months of the Southwest
Monsoon. As a result of this phenomenon, Kerela is blessed with
the lushest green landscape in India. The summer months from March to May can get quite hot, while the winter months of December and January are best for visits.
Transportation
Kerala is fairly easy for tourist travel. Private taxis are both readily available and easily arranged for. The more adventurous can try out the local buses.
