
Tomb of St. Francis
One of the not to be missed tourist attractions in Goa is the Tomb of St. Francis, sited within the Basilica of Bom Jesus, about ten kilometres off Panjim. Francis Xavier was an influential Roman Catholic missionary of the 16th century, during the times of Portuguese colonization. From Europe to Africa and Asia to Oceania, Francis Xavier served as a notable missionary in numerous countries. He was canonized as Saint Francis Xavier posthumously, in March 1622. Presently his mortal remains are deposited in a magnificent mausoleum in one of the oldest churches in Goa, the Basilica of Bom Jesus. The relics are displayed to the public every ten years.
After Francis Xavier’s demise in December 1552, his remains were buried in Sancian, an isle in the southern Chinese coast. A year later the body was taken to Malacca, a state in Malaysia, and was buried again. It is said that even after an elapse of more than a year his body was found not to be decayed. Later the relics of St. Francis were sent to Goa and buried in the Basilica of Bom Jesus, encased in a silver sarcophagus. The Tomb of St. Francis was built in the 17th century, encapsulating the holy casket with exquisite artistry.
