The Fort Aguada
Adorning the western coastline of India rests a Portuguese stronghold known as The Fort Aguada. Built in the 17th century, this fortress is popular as one of the top historical tourist attractions in Goa. The Fort Aguada rests on the mouth of Mandovi River and sprawls along the Sinquerim Beach, facing the Arabian Sea. Hence it is also one of the best spots for sightseeing in Goa, where visitors can view an impressive fort against a stunning coastal backdrop.
The Fort Aguada is one of the best preserved forts in Goa, built by the Portuguese in 1612. The fort was built to protect the northern river mouth against the invading Dutch troops and the local Marathas. In the olden times, freshwater springs found inside the fort satisfied the water requirements of Portuguese ships. An old rampart extends towards the bay and forms a pier, flanked by sandy coves.
Laterite was used to construct the ramparts of The Fort Aguada, giving a ruddy tone that stands out against the pastel shades of the sandy Sinquerim shoreline. Today these imposing ramparts of the fort enclose the state prison. The Fort Aguada is also famous for nestling over 70 cannons as well as one of the oldest lighthouses in Asia. This four storey tall Portuguese lighthouse is said to be built in 1864.
The Fort Aguada in Goa is a magnificent spot for photography, while being a not to be missed Goan attraction for history enthusiasts. Visit this historical fort from The Leela Kempinski Goa, one of the best Mobor beach resorts and enjoy the many splendours of living in the lap of luxury.
