Vidhana Soudha
One of Bangalore’s most majestic landmarks, Vidhana Soudha contains the Karnataka State Legislative Chambers. It is also home to 22 state departments. The 300 room building which reaches a height of 46 meters and occupies an area of 60 acres is the largest legislative building in India. Over 5000 labourers and 1500 artisans were involved in the construction which commenced in 1952, and took four years of continuous work to complete this grand edifice.
Constructed mainly of granite, Vidhana Soudha follows the style of Dravidian temple architecture. Four traditional domes crown the four corners of the structure. The four headed lion guarding the principal entry to the building fittingly symbolizes Indian sovereignty. Certain aspects of modern designing technology using reinforced concrete, steel and plastic have also been incorporated in creating this indigenous masterpiece.
The interior of Vidhana Soudha is characterized by richly carved bases, friezes, cornices and arches showcasing the artistic splendour of Indian architecture. One of the major attractions within the building is the exquisite sandalwood door leading to the cabinet room. The Legislative Assembly Chamber situated on the first floor is capable of seating one hundred more than the 268 members who use it today, ensuring optimum comfort and convenience. An awe inspiring section of the building is the splendid State Banquet Hall located beneath the central dome.Prior permission must be obtained before visiting the interior of the legislative building. A leisurely visit to Vidhana Southa, is bound to provide visitors with an image of the artistic grandeur of India’s Garden City.
