Palace of Tipu Sultan
The Palace of Tipu Sultan also known as Daria Daulat Bagh is located on the banks of the Cauvery River neighbouring the Bangalore Market. Constructed entirely from Teak wood, the royal abode served as a summer retreat for the famous Mysore Emperor, Tipu Sultan. Its protection was assured by the Tipu Sultan Fort whose origins run back to the 16th century where the castle was erected in 1790.
The design of Daria Daulat Bagh was inspired by the style of the Windsor Castle which had strongly impressed the sultan during a visit to England. Hence it is characterized by medieval turrets, battlements and windows. However, traditional elements of Islamic art are also apparent in its myriad embellishments, rendering it a truly unique edifice. The outer walls with intricately carved arches and the exquisite floral motifs that decorate the palace walls and ceiling are some of these exotic, inspiring touches.
Opened to the public since 2005 in order to cover the maintenance cost of the place, the palace houses a unique museum. The numerous rare and valuable photographs and paintings on display tell the tale of Bangalore’s historic past. Principally devoted to the powerful Hyder-Tipu regime, the exhibits provide an insightful depiction of its cultural ethos. The beautiful gardens surrounding the palace are another of its major attractions reflecting the natural bounty of the Garden City of India.
