Lalbagh Botanical Gardens

Located in central Bangalore, Lalbagh Botanical Gardens is deservingly considered the jewel of India’s Garden City. The Mogul style park was initiated as a private royal ground in 1740 by Mysore’s famous ruler Haider Ali. It was further expanded by his son Tipu Sultan. In the 1870’s many rare plants were imported from the Kew Gardens in England by John Cameron who managed the Lalbagh Gardens. Today, the 240 acre reserve is one of South Asia’s premier botanical gardens in terms of natural diversity, design and maintenance as well as scientific and scenic value.

The immense premises enclosed by a stone wall are home to 1,854 native and exotic plant species. Most of the garden’s trees are recorded to be over 100 years old. It also contains the most comprehensive collection of rare plants found in the Indian subcontinent. The diversity of flora found in the gardens and the considerable research and conservation projects carried out by its personnel have earned the park international acclaim.

Magnificently adorned by expansive lawns, fountains and lotus pools, the park contains several popular attractions. Foremost among these is the Glass House built in the 19th century. The biannual flower exhibition held at this venue is a globally popular event reflecting the important position held by the Lalbagh Botanical Gardens. A visit to the picturesque site provides a unique opportunity for recreation and peaceful relaxation. A visit to the Lalbagh Botanical Gardens will magically enhance the city’s serene environment where nature’s bounty is preserved at its best.
