Capt. Nair receives the AEPC Lifetime Achievement Award
Capt. C.P.Krishnan Nair, Chairman, Leela Scottish Lace Private Ltd has been awarded the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award from the Apparel Export Promotion Council (APEC) in recognition for his outstanding contribution to the apparel industry. This is the first Lifetime Achievement Award instituted by Govt of India for Textiles. Capt. Nair received this highest honour from Shri Shankersinh Vaghela, Hon’ble Union Textile Minister in the presence of Shri A. K. Singh, Secretary, Ministry of Textiles at a glittering ceremony held in Gurgaon, Delhi on 18th July. The award has been given to Capt. Nair for his innovations and pioneering achievements in the textile industry and recognises his dedication, perfection and exemplary ways for the modernization of the trade and for the crafting of modern apparel manufacturing.
In Capt Nair’s words, “ It gives me great pleasure to receive this highest distinction. This award is a token of the industry’s appreciation for my humble efforts. Our industry had started with a small Exporter’s Guild which ultimately blossomed into AEPC. India has now become a major player in the field of apparel exports. The industry has reached a level of exports of US$ 8627. It is a remarkable 31.22% growth over the previous year. Apparel exports are at fifth position in terms of all India exports. Garment industry now provides a direct employment to more than 3 million workers.” Capt Nair said that he was both honoured and delighted to get this recognition as well as the four awards that the company received which is a pointer to its excellence in performance and service.
The four awards received by Leela Scottish Lace are: For its highest export in Cotton Garments 2005-06, highest exports in Woven Garments 2005 -06, highest exports by Manufacturer Exporter 2005-06 and for being the highest group employment provider.
Mr. Dinesh Nair, the Managing Director of the company, took over from his father Capt. C.P. Krishnan Nair, in the early 80’s. .Today Leela Scottish Lace Pvt Ltd has 17 factories with state of the art equipment – 8 in Bangalore, 7 in Chennai and one each at Cochin and Trivandrum., with an annual turnover of US$ 100 million. With a commitment to excellence and innovation.
Leela Lace Ltd. grew from a small beginning in 1957 to become the first company to introduce the “Bleeding Madras” fabric and other handlooms such as Cheese Cloth and gauze fabric to the fashion capitals of the west, specifically the USA. Their runaway success was reflected in the magic words “Guaranteed to bleed”, which became the key to the popularity of India’s textile export. In the early 70’s, the company launched its ready-made garments unit and is today, India’s premier export house. Gap, Liz Claiborne, Polo Jeans, Tommy Hilfiger, JC Penney, Macy’s, Van Heusen, Walmart among others are its famed clientele.
